22mm Carbon Fiber Tube: What It Is and What It's For

The short version

22mm outside diameter, 19mm bore, 1000mm long, 1.5mm wall.

That single specification is 8.7 percent of everything we've shipped in six years, and in 2026 it's running at closer to a third of the year's volume. It's the size we sell most of by a margin, and it's the one I'd point a first-time buyer at if their fittings allow it.

Here's what it actually is, why it works, and the two things about it that would have surprised me a year ago.

What the spec means

Take the numbers apart, because the arrangement is the point.

22mm outside. That's the fit dimension. It's the number your clamp, cap or drilled hole has to match.

19mm bore. A genuinely useful hole. Wide enough to pass a wiring loom through, wide enough to slide a smaller tube inside for a telescoping joint, and wide enough to get a connector or a fastener down. A lot of tubes at this diameter come with a much smaller bore, and the hole is the thing that limits what you can build.

1.5mm wall. This falls out of the first two: (22 − 19) ÷ 2 = 1.5mm. Not thin, not heavy. Enough material to resist dents and to take a clamp without collapsing, without the weight penalty of a 2mm wall.

1000mm. A metre. Cut it down to whatever your build needs.

So it lands in a good place on all four variables at once, which is a rarer thing than it sounds. Most sizes compromise somewhere — a good fit but a useless bore, or a stiff wall that weighs too much.

One size, two very different kinds of buyer

And here's where it stops being a simple product recommendation.

Six years of near-nothing, then it takes off. 2025 is four times any previous year and 2026 is already more than three times 2025, with a quarter of the year still to run.

That shape — flat, flat, then vertical — is not what a popular size looks like. A size that's genuinely popular drifts up and down with the rest of the catalogue. A vertical line usually means a customer, or a type of customer, arrived.

Fifty-five customers have ever bought a 22mm tube from us. Out of 574. And between them, three orders account for 190 of the 238 units sold.

So when I say 22mm is our best seller, I mean something narrower than it sounds. It's not the size everyone buys. It's the size a small group of buyers buys in serious quantity, and that group found us recently.

What that means if you're building one

You are, statistically, in the minority. Most 22mm tube leaves here in forty- and hundred-piece lots, not singly.

That has three practical consequences worth knowing before you order.

Stock is reliable. Sizes that trade buyers order in hundreds stay on the shelf. You're unlikely to find this one back-ordered, and it'll usually ship the same week.

It's priced for the small order too, because the volume is there. Worth checking against a 20mm or 25mm of similar wall, because sometimes the popular size is cheaper than the near-equivalent.

Nobody will think your order is odd. One tube of a size that mostly goes out in bulk is a perfectly normal order — 77 percent of our order lines are a single piece.

Why 1.5mm wall at this diameter

Worth explaining, because it's the choice that makes the tube work.

Bending stiffness rises very steeply with diameter and only linearly with wall. At 22mm, a 1.5mm wall already gives you a stiff part. Going to 2mm would add roughly a third more stiffness for roughly a third more weight, and a third more weight at the outboard end of a structure is a worse deal than it looks on paper.

Below 1.5mm you start losing dent resistance and the ability to take a clamp without reinforcement. Half a millimetre at 22mm is a shell; it's available and it's used, but it needs a sleeve at every fixing point.

So 1.5mm is where the two pressures balance. It's the reason our 22mm sales are 84 percent the 1.5mm wall and barely touch the other options.

What it's good for

Being straight about my limits here: our order data records what people bought, never what they built. So I can't tell you what most of those 190 units became.

What I can do is tell you what the geometry suits, which is a different and still useful thing.

Drone and multirotor arms, in the middle and larger sizes. 22mm at 1.5mm wall is a sensible arm diameter for a build in the 300mm to 450mm arm class, where a 16mm tube starts to flex and a 25mm is more than the frame needs.

Booms and spars where the tube spans a gap and has to stay straight. The wall is stiff enough that the span stops being the limiting factor.

Telescoping sections. A 19mm bore takes a 18mm or 19mm tube inside it, or a 16mm with clearance. If you're building something that slides, the bore is the number to work around, and 19mm is a useful one.

Mounts and brackets where hardware has to pass through. A 19mm hole will take most connectors and a surprising amount of cable.

Frames where 22mm clamps are available, which is worth noting on its own. Our tube clamps run from 10mm to 40mm, so 22mm is a size you can mount without drilling.

The alternatives either side

The 24mm is the interesting comparison. It's stiffer than the 22mm because of the larger diameter, and it's lighter because 90 percent of our 24mm sales are the 1mm wall. But the bore drops to 22mm, which is still useful.

If your fittings are 24mm rather than 22mm, you're not losing anything by going up.

What I'd want to know before recommending it

Three things, and if you can answer them, the choice is usually obvious.

What does the tube have to fit into? That fixes the outside diameter and nothing else will do.

How far apart are the supports, and what's hanging off it? That's the load case, and it decides whether 1.5mm is generous or marginal.

Does anything need to pass through the bore? Cable, a fastener, or another tube inside. If yes, the bore sets a floor on the outside diameter.

Answer those and 22mm is either right, too small, or the wrong question entirely — and you'll know which.

At 22mm outside and a span under about 450mm, yes, comfortably, and it's what 84 percent of our 22mm customers choose. Past that span, the answer moves toward a larger diameter rather than a thicker wall.

What bore options does the 22mm come in?

18mm, 19mm and 20mm. The 19mm is the one that sells, accounting for the overwhelming majority of units. The other two exist for builds where the bore has to be a specific size.

Can I use a 22mm tube with your clamps?

Yes. Our clamps cover 10mm to 40mm, so 22mm is directly mountable without drilling the tube. For a rigid joint, use one at each end of the span rather than a single clamp in the middle.
