Most Popular Carbon Fiber Tube Sizes: Six Years of Order Data

The honest answer is 1mm

If you want the single most useful number from six years of our order history, it isn't a diameter. It's a wall thickness.

1mm.

That's 857 units out of 1,916 where I could work the wall out from the outside diameter and the bore. Nearly 45 percent. Every other wall thickness on the site combined does less than that.

I had assumed it would be 2mm. Most of the advice out there, including some of what we've written ourselves, points at a 2mm wall for anything structural. The orders disagree. 2mm is the second choice at 22 percent, with 1.5mm just behind at 20 percent, but 1mm is the one people actually buy.

So this is what the data says, and where I think my assumption came from. It's 725 orders and 2,258 units, running from January 2020 to September 2026 — the whole life of the shop, not a sample.

Worth saying up front: this is our customer base, which skews toward model aircraft, drones and small-batch engineering. A store supplying oil and gas, or a bike frame maker, would show a completely different distribution. Where I draw a conclusion below, I'll say so. Where it's just a number, it's just a number.

Wall thickness: what people actually choose

Read that as a bell curve with a very tall spike at 1mm and a shoulder at 1.5 to 2mm. Below 1mm the volume collapses. Above 2mm it collapses again.

There's a practical logic to it that I'd missed. A 1mm wall in a 10mm or 12mm tube is roughly a tenth of the diameter, and that ratio is stiff enough for a model airframe arm while staying light enough that nobody has to think about it. It's the wall that gets the job done without a weight conversation.

The 0.5mm band is interesting and small — 5 percent. Those buyers know exactly what they're doing, because a half-millimetre wall is not a forgiving part. It dents, and a clamp will crush it if you do the bolts up hard. That isn't a beginner's purchase.

And the 3mm cohort, 4 percent, are almost certainly buying for something that takes a beating rather than something that flies.

No diameter runs away with it. The top two are 10.5 and 9.2 percent, which over 2,258 units is close to a wash, and the whole distribution is flatter than I expected. Twelve sizes all above 2 percent, and a long tail behind them.

That is a more useful thing to know than a winner would be. It means there is no single "correct" carbon fiber tube, and anyone telling you there is has probably looked at their own sales and generalised.

But the top two got there in completely different ways

Here's where it gets interesting, and where a single snapshot of the data would have misled me.

The 22mm is a genuine trend. Four units in 2024, forty-five in 2025, a hundred and fifty-seven so far in 2026, and the year isn't finished. There is a full write-up on that one specification if it's the size you're looking at. That's a real shift in what people are building, or in what we're visible for, or both.

The 8mm is not a trend. It's one year. 130 units in 2024 against single figures either side of it. I went back and looked, because a spike like that has a cause, and the cause is that a couple of buyers placed very large orders. Take those out and the 8mm sits at roughly fifteen a year, which would put it around fifteenth on the list instead of second.

This is the trap with order data and it's worth naming. A handful of trade orders can make a small size look like a phenomenon. If I had only looked at totals, I would have written that 8mm is one of our most popular sizes and that would have been wrong in every way that matters to someone choosing a tube.

1000mm takes more than half. That's consistent across all seven years and it's the one finding I'd bet on holding if you repeated this analysis on someone else's store — a metre is the length that covers the most plausible builds, so it's the safe order.

The postage argument for 500mm is real. A 1000mm tube is awkward to ship and past a certain length the carriers charge accordingly. People buy the long one anyway, presumably because a 500 that turns out to be 20mm short is a wasted week, and an offcut is not.

Weave and finish: genuinely a coin toss

13 units separate twill from plain across 2,295 total. Nine units separate matte from glossy across 2,677.

I could write a paragraph interpreting that. There's nothing to interpret. On a straight tube the weave is a surface appearance and the finish is a surface appearance, and people buy whichever they prefer the look of. If you're agonising over this, stop — you're spending decision time on the one variable that has no mechanical consequence.

What I'd take from six years of this

Start at a 1mm wall unless you have a reason not to. That's what most people end up with, and the reasoning behind it holds up — thin enough to be light, thick enough to be stiff at these diameters.

Go up to 1.5 or 2mm when the load justifies it, and know what you're buying. The full breakdown of which wall suits which diameter is in the wall thickness guide. Don't pick a diameter because it's popular here. The distribution is flat, which means the "popular" choice barely exists. Pick the diameter your fitting needs, then pick the wall.

Ignore the weave and finish debate.

Roughly two percent of the volume above sits in lengths we only ever supplied on request. That's not nothing, and it's the strongest argument for emailing rather than assuming.

What this data can't tell you

Three things, and I'd rather state them than let the tables imply otherwise.

It's a small shop's customer base, not the market. 2,258 units is a decent sample for a business this size and a completely meaningless one for the industry.

A few large orders distort it. I showed you the 8mm case. There will be others I haven't caught, and every per-year figure above should be read with that in mind.

And it only records what people bought, never what they wanted. If a size is missing from the list, that could mean nobody wanted it or that we never made it easy to find. There's no way to tell from order data, which is exactly why we read the emails.

Frequently asked

So what is the most popular carbon fiber tube, really?

By wall, 1mm, comfortably. By diameter, nothing dominates — 22mm and 8mm lead at around 10 and 9 percent, and you should treat that as "no strong preference" rather than a recommendation.

Does the 22mm trend mean I should use 22mm?

Only if 22mm suits your fittings and your span. The trend is real and it's recent, but a trend in other people's orders is not an engineering argument for your build.

Why is 1mm wall so much more common than 2mm?

I think it's the ratio. At 10mm to 16mm outside, a 1mm wall is stiff enough for a model airframe and light enough that weight never becomes a conversation. 2mm is what you move to when something is flexing or taking impacts, and that's a smaller group of people.

Is a 0.5mm wall usable?

Yes, and it's not for beginners. 5 percent of our volume goes out at half a millimetre. It's light and it dents easily, and a clamp tightened onto a thin wall without a sleeve behind it will crush the tube flat. If that's the spec, read the workshop guide first.

Why does 2000mm barely appear?

Because we only ever listed it in one size. That's a supply limitation showing up as a demand number, and it's the clearest example here of the data reflecting what we offered rather than what people wanted.
